Stepping Down

Written by C Hues

Power tends to muddy morals
The soul becomes a phantom pain
		Conscience slips into the shadows
Stepping down to make a gain

Selling someone else’s lies
Fist bumps to the other guys
		Thinking your career will rise
Stepping down to reach new highs

August Night

Up in my room—one August Night
I heard a patter—pit pat pit pat
The thunder froze my dog in fright
And lightning posed—but I just sat
I’m cool like jazz—that’s what I thought
But then I felt it and I was caught!

Pit pat pit pat—it came back
And then I felt it in my hair
My eyes zapped up—and saw the crack
And nature shot quick through the tear
I tried to dodge—but it was done
The August Night is always fun

The Island

Separated by sea, surrounded by blue
We were one, now split in two
The sunken ships, each sailor’s soul
The storm persists, she takes her toll

No visitors in sight, keep company close
A palm tree’s shadow, a crab at coast
The ruthless sun, the mocking moon
The different days, from noon to noon

Forgiveness

Forgiveness—the final frontier
Intentions dismissed and apologies scrutinized
I wait while your face grows weak with fear
But my pride’s protected and this is an unfamiliar place

I fight to remember, review, and retain
For when rage has subsided, I’m sunken in shame
The shallow insults, the broken bonds
I’m in too deep to lose this game

I think of Lewis who accepted his attackers
I think of slaves who prayed for their masters
I think of ancestors who overcame abuse
Of every kind, but still knew hate was no use

I haven’t conquered what they’ve conquered
So maybe that’s the explanation—I read, see, and hear
Your strength shouldn’t be my shame
Forgiveness is the final frontier

The Cazique

He promised all—delivered none
Gregarious green, the snake hatched schemes
Like golden streams the lies did run
Pounds in his pocket from dead men’s dreams

The Cazique was quick and never caught
While thousands died—diseased, distraught
Here’s land for you that he will sell
If Karma’s real, he’s prince in hell
