Drought

Dying from water, dying in debt
Dead sons and daughters, and houses bereft
Can’t get the appraisal, black people never left
Jesus, we died but my people never slept
And the supremacists say white Jesus never wept

Consumed by fear, left with doubt
We all know there’s not one way out
When everything’s so roundabout
The politicians keep their clout
While people like us endure the drought

Deep End

This is uncharted and dangerous
To tell the truth takes you down
You say, “our team won’t favor us”
Indeed, they’ll cheer as you die and drown

The lifeguard will laugh and laugh
Yes—your savior stays shallow
This must be America’s better half
Who named a hatemonger “hallow”

Freeze

“Freeze”—that’s a word that you’ll never hear
When the hunters are armed with lead, followed by fear
It’s hands down a bad time to be good
But when I put my hands up, all they see is the hood

The cops never said freeze to the rapists of Recy
If I was passing for white, would corrupt cops even see me?
I wonder if I see the light—maybe it finally frees me
But death in the dark—it may only freeze me.

The Wave

When I was young, I would punch wave after wave
Who would you call on Virginia Beach?
When the waves grew big, my dad and I would save
All the surfers and sunbathers from the ocean’s reach

We are here to stop and send
All the waves back to Poseidon
Now Virginians join the trend
And all the DMV will dive in

You can’t defeat us—not united
Punch and kick like a goddamn fool
My older sister looks excited
Dad and brother are so cool

We are here to stop and send
All the waves back to Poseidon
Now Virginians join the trend
And all the DMV will dive in

Downpour

We’re headed downhill like the owners from Ulster
Mulattoes were the creation—Brits and Irish were the authors
They fancied the fancies, opportunity, and greed
As the wants trickled down to overcome the needs
It’s a stretch like Reed if you think things are fantastic
Pathetic push for power, policies so plastic

Politicians lie about lowering the crime rate
Yet hardly a single one tries to rehabilitate
They put the poor down when the downpour came
The middle class is mentioned, but below that is inane
You must be insane—cause if you don’t wanna drown
Reaganomics must reign, and watch the lie trickle down
