Forgiveness—the final frontier Intentions dismissed and apologies scrutinized I wait while your face grows weak with fear But my pride’s protected and this is an unfamiliar place I fight to remember, review, and retain For when rage has subsided, I’m sunken in shame The shallow insults, the broken bonds I’m in too deep to lose this game I think of Lewis who accepted his attackers I think of slaves who prayed for their masters I think of ancestors who overcame abuse Of every kind, but still knew hate was no use I haven’t conquered what they’ve conquered So maybe that’s the explanation—I read, see, and hear Your strength shouldn’t be my shame Forgiveness is the final frontier
