Hierarchy

In this lovely place,
There’s a hierarchy here.
Keep a phony face.

At the party, people part—
Gentrified from the start.

You answer phones and they blame you.
“Why can’t I speak to the nurse?”
Then colleagues try to frame you—
Picture your day getting worse.
Oh, but it surely will.
They think they wear the crown.
Some sick patients make you ill.
Lose your patience and your will.
They treat you bad if you’re black and brown
And nobody is healed (no body is healed).
You become bitter, broken too.
And you lose sight of you.
Just remember why you started here.
But memory can’t hold.

At the party, people part—
Gentrified from the start.

Keep a phony face.
There’s a hierarchy here,
In this lovely place.

Pink Elephant

December 9, 2023

Let’s talk about the pink elephant in your mind
The one you try not to think about
As your fears constrict and choke and bind
The more you fight, the more you doubt.

There’s a monster that they say is not you
One you can’t eradicate
Yet each day your enemies become new
And your friends, you start to hate.

You keep overthinking thinking
As all your thoughts turn capricious
With all the snark, you start thanking
God for being vicious.

Generation Me

There’s a problem with no solution
I dare not smile as I go pass
The kids in name who claim a revolution
Repeat their sins right after mass.

The children hate their parents yet they still echo
And talk like parrots in a cage
Yet they’re so free and smart just like a crow
To copy sins is all the rage.

We see the same old hand-me-down movie
Yet we pretend it’s something new
Profiles for the movements, truly
It’s just to make a faker you.

Paid Time Off

December 5, 2023

You’ve got paid time off.
You’ll be off around Christmas.
Well, you thought you’d be.

He’s got paid time off.
He’ll be off around Christmas.
He told the boss first.

She’s got paid time off.
She’ll be off around Christmas,
Although she’s the worst.

Now you’re so ticked off.
You feel off around Christmas,
At your job with glee.

December

It’s the last month of the year,
Where people freeze in fear.
I should have done this—remember,
There’s no better time for regret than December.

As Christmas arrives, and the year closes—
Your New Year Resolutions died like the roses.
And you can start some again when January begins,
So you can make new mistakes and tally more sins.
