Bend

Somewhere—in sleeping silence
You can go to school and return home
You can go to any neighborhood and roam
And even thoughts lack violence

Someplace—in perennial paradise
You will walk without a worry
You will notice no one’s in a hurry
And virtue stands instead of vice

Someday—in our most hazardous hopes
You may feel joy and forget fear
You may dream and disappear
And know your back is far from the ropes

Sometimes—in the dourest day
You find the world waiting
Amidst all the bullshit and debating
For that arc to bend the righteous way

Ignore

Hard to stay sane when the medicine is in your brain
Madman rebrand Russia rushin’ into Ukraine
Maddy’s movin’ X in Maine can anyone explain
It’s a war if you’re brown and black a crisis if you’re not
You tried to pay for insulin but this is all you got
Oh well congress says go to hell guess your Grandma’s gotta rot

No ma’am can’t abort
Thanks a lot supreme court
Roll back the other rights while the right holds down the fort
Don’t feel safe in Church, School, your Grocery Store
Make up missing votes sure there should be some more
And the guns and the guns the kids killed ain’t yours so just ignore

Who We Are

I was a weapon
Who cut the Nazis down to size
Became the devil bringing hell before their eyes
I slayed so many men—they thought that I was Death
The gift I gave to them while taking their last breath
And when I came home, I was hated just the same
And all forgot my name

I was a Marshall
And before that was enslaved
I sent my master to his grave
He made me fight for him to keep the South apart
I stabbed him in his sleep, the blood rushed from his heart
I fled for Texas, started hunting wanted men
I made the most arrests—my name’s not known to pen

I was a Pullman Porter
Spent a lifetime shining shoes
The passengers put me through the blues
All of us were “boy” or “George” or worse
I traveled everywhere—could not escape the curse
One day I punched a man who spit right in my face
He said, “You’ve done it now, you’ve fought with the wrong race”
I was in the South and spent my years in jail
My story—no one did tell

I’ll live forever
Flying freely past the pain
And we will always know your story—when it rains
I hear the thunder—you are calling out your name
I’ll catch the lightning—let it flow throughout my veins
The wind won’t silence us—the everlasting flame
Down on Earth if you look straight into a star
You’ll see our history thus far
This is who we are

Craft

As she shadow swings—she stills the crowd
Making her partner proud at home
Each lightning serve, each passing cloud
Now’s the time to seal the dome

Not bad for “too old” and “past her prime”
She slices through the shattered space
Don’t dare to blink—you’re out of time
The grass yields to her craft and grace

Firefly

Fire fleeing from the hands without the wrinkles
Coat of darkness wrapped around the sky
Camouflaged—then caught, too bright to not shine
The jar of light that flickered mid-July

My tiny palm transformed into a GIANT’s
The hunt was over—but the thing didn’t die
The creature cried a fading flame
No freedom for the firefly
