Red in an Interview

I think it wise—this shirt I choose
But now their faces say, “You lose!”
I gambled, but it appears for naught
“Is that ketchup, or blood from when you fought?”

“Are you a car salesman, trying to earn his place?”
“Were you born yesterday—with all those wrinkles on your face?”
“Thanks, and you’ll be hearing back from us soon.”
I interviewed in March and now it’s June.

You endured the cruelty from Capitol clowns
Simply because your skin is brown
You are the first of many faces
That the future embodies and embraces

The sagacious soul to set the stage
To know control and dismiss rage
To prove all the women denied
That their daughters’ dreams are satisfied

Peace

Peace is patience perfected through practice
The calm in the chaos, stillness in the storm
The turtle’s shell, the needles on the cactus
The invincible, immutable form

When you are always antagonized
You may feel your power fade
But there’s no need to agonize
For your light within attracts the shade
